A hallmark of the NCSP system has always been
its promotion of high quality continuing professional development (CPD). For
many years, school psychologists who hold the NCSP have been required to engage
in activities designed to maintain, expand, and extend their professional
training and skills. To further encourage high quality CPD, the NCSP Board has
instituted two new CPD content standards that are being phased in over time.
Changes to the NCSP Renewal Requirements
Effective with renewals - January 2009
and beyond
1. Training in Ethics and Professional Practices. If your NCSP credential was due for renewal on January 1,
2009 and beyond, you must attest to the completion of 3 hours of professional
development in ethics or professional practices. Professional practices include
topics related to legal regulations that affect school psychology, such as to
IDEA, NCLB, or Section 504.
To help you meet this requirement, Equine
Learning Center, Inc offers cutting edge CEU classes, including a 3 hour Ethics Class. See ‘Upcoming Events’ for more information.
Effective with renewals - January 2010
and beyond
2. Training from a NASP-, APA-, or NBCC-Approved Provider.
The NASP-approved provider system was created to
assist school psychologists in obtaining quality professional development.
NASP-approved providers must demonstrate that their offerings align with NASP
standards, are provided by qualified professionals, and are intended to enhance
professional competencies, skills, or knowledge.
NCSPs who renew on January 1, 2010 and beyond
must obtain a portion of their CPD credits through a NASP-, APA-, or
NBCC-approved provider. While the NCSP Board initially made this requirement
due in the Spring of 2009 for all one-third (25) of the CPD credits, due to the
impact of the national economic crisis on schools and their employees, the
decision was reached to implement the requirement gradually.
The number of NASP-, APA-, or NBCC-approved
hours within the 75 CPDs will be 10 hours for January 1, 2010. On January 1 of
each subsequent year the number will increase by 5.
